OLD HAKODATE POST OFFICE GOVERNMENT
BUILDING The postal service in
Hakodate was started in 1872. The first public post office here
opend in the Kaikanjo building in Omachi. The customs department
inspected ship cargo and admitted tourists to Hakodate. In 1875 the
post office was named the Hakodate Pos t Office and moved s everal
times. In 1911 a permanent building was constructed in Omachi. This
building was for the Post Office and other government departments.
This is one of the typical Meiji period western style building in
Hakodate. After 50 years use、 it was sold to a private individual in
1962. |
